Day 113 - Dumka

Dumka is one of the oldest districts of Jharkhand state under Santha Parganass. This homeland of tribals is full of stunning landscapes, majestic mountains, verdant valleys and serpentine rivers.Dumka is situated in an idyllic surrounding of hill ranges, rivers and forests. The District of Dumka is an upland tract with a hilly backbone running from North to South. Ramgarh Hills lies in South East of Dumka, Lagwa Hills near Nonihat, adds a fascinating charm to the beauty of the District and gives satisfaction of rare scenic beauty to those who toil hard to scale the heights of the mountain ranges.The Mughals named the town ‘Dumka’ because of its unique location and landscape. The name Dumka actually means ‘skirt of hills’ as the town is surrounded by hills on all sides. The presence of fast flowing rivers such as Ajoy and Mayurakshi, provide opportunities of adventure sports such as rafting and para-sailing.

By Air: Nearest airports are  Kolkata, Patna & Ranchi.

By Rail:  Nearest station is Jasidih which is 75 KM from Dumka city.


Best time to visit: February to April.

Places you must visit: 

Mayurakshi river is the major river of the Dumka District and is around 250 km long. The river has its source in the Trikut Hill. 





Baba Basukinath Dham is located on the Deoghar-Dumka State Highway. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is visited by many travellers during the month of Shravan.







Baba Sumeshwar Nath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is visited by many tourists during the festival of Mahashivratri. The temple is situated in the Saraiyahat Block, 60 km  away from the city center.



Massanjore Dam, popularly known as the Canada Dam, is constructed across the Mayurakshi river and is surrounded by forests and hills. It was constructed in 1955. The dam is 34.4 m high and 609.6 m long. Around 50,000 acres of agrarian land is irrigated with the help of water coming from this dam. The dam was constructed with the motive to generate hydroelectric power.





Tatloi is a hot water spring, surrounded by mountains. It is situated at a distance of 15 km from the headquarters of the Dumka District.



Malooti is located in the Shikaraipara Block, on the Dumka-Rampurhat Interstate Highway.  This place was made a tax free capital by the king, Basant Rai. in 1860 A.D.











Kumdabad is a very beautiful picnic spot . Just 13 Kms. from the Dumka town , you find a rare view of natural beauty with small hills ,beside that smooth flowing river Mayurakshi.
