Day 112 - Giridih

Giridih is in the Chhotanagpur region of Jharkhand state and the area is mostly covered with bamboo and sal trees. Giridih was created in the year 1972 from the district of Hazaribagh. Giridih situated in the centre of Jharkhand is surrounded by a number of hills including the world famous Jain Pilgrimage Shrine, where 20 out of 24 Jain Tirthankaras attained Nirvana, the 'Salvation'. The economy of Giridih is dependant more on agriculture. About 85440 hectares of land in the region of Giridih is under cultivation and the presence of natural resources in the region makes the cultivation more fruitful.


How to reach here:

By Air: Nearest airport is at Ranchi.

By Rail: The nearest well connected railway station are at Ranchi (185 km) and Bokaro Steel City (110 km).


Best time to visit: November to March.


Languages spoken: Magadhi, Bengali, Hindi.


Places you must visit:


Kharagdiha, a village near Giridih, is popular for the Langta Baba Samadhi Sthal. Langta Baba was a saint who was worshiped by the local people as god. A Surya temple is situated in the middle of a lake in the shape of a lotus near Kharagdiha.



Khandoli village has a reservoir and is known for activities like parasailing, boating, kayaking, rock climbing and camel and elephant safari. A watchtower and a 600 ft hillock are located nearby Khandoli.





Madhuban, a Jain pilgrim center  is situated close to Pirtand tehsil in the district of Giridih. The place is known for an ancient temple which is around 2000 years old. The Bhomiyaji Asthan and the Jain temple of Samosharan are also situated nearby. A Jain museum that displays different scriptures, manuscripts and idols is situated in Madhuban.





The Usri Falls is located around 13 km from Giridih. It falls from a height of around 40 ft and is surrounded by a dense forest. River Usri, a tributary of the Barakar River, flows down a gorge as Usri Falls that finally divides into three fast flowing streams.






Sammed Shikharji, close to Giridih, is a popular Digambar Jain Teerth Kshetra. It is a place where twenty teerthankars attained salvation. Sammed Shikharji is also known as Teerthraj, the King of Teerths. Temples dedicated to each of the twenty teerthankars are located on the Parasnath Hills. Some of these shrines are believed to be around 2000 years old.








Kabir Gyan Mandir is popular as a home of Mother Gyan, a disciple of Shri Vivek Prabhujee. Guru Govind Dham has been recently constructed at this place over the monument of Shri Vivek Prabhujee.



The Hari Har Dham is famous for a Shivalinga that is 65 ft high. It took around 30 years to make this Shivalinga. The dham is visited by many travellers, especially during the Shravan Poornima.







Jharkhandi Dham is one of the most important pilgrim center of Jharkhand from which the name of newly formed state has been derived.It possesses a Shiva Temple where annual fair takes place.
