Day 141 - Kailashahar

Kailashahar is a town that is situated in the state of Tripura in the North Tripura district. The town is located along the border of Bangladesh. The town has an old history and there have been settlements here that date back many centuries.


How to reach here:

By Air: The nearest airport is situated in the town of Agartala, which is the state capital. The place is connected to several Indian cities such as Guwahati, Silchar, Imphal, Kolkata, Ahmadabad, New Delhi and Mumbai.

By Rail: The town does not possess an active railway station and one has to reach the place from cities such as Kumarghat or Agartala. The place is well connected by road and you can use taxis, buses and jeeps to reach the place.


Best time to visit: October to May.


Languages spoken: Bengali, Kokborok.


Places you must visit: 

Unakoti is famous for waterfall and a few stone images, rock cut carvings and murals. Unakoti is a pilgrimage spot for the Shaivas and dates back to the 7th century.The word ‘Unakoti’ means ‘one less than a crore.’ According to Hindu mythology, on the way to Kashi, Lord Shiva and ‘Unakoti’ gods and goddesses stayed back at this place, for a night. When Lord Shiva tried to wake them before dawn, they failed to get up and were cursed to stones. Therefore, the place consists of one less than a crore stone carvings or images.The most prominent of the rock cut carvings are the big Ganesha figures and the central Shiva head. The Shiva head also called the ‘Unakotiswara Kal Bhairava’ has a height of some 30 ft and is inclusive of a head-dress that is of a height of 10 ft. On one side of the head-dress, there is a full-size figure of Goddess Durga standing on a lion and on the other side; there is a female figure. Also, three images of Nandi Bull are found to be half buried in the ground.




The Chouddo Devotar Mandir or 14 deities temple is situated at a distance of about 14 km from the city of Agartala. The temple is dedicated to Ama or the mother of the people of Tripura, also known as Tripuri. According to legends, Maharaja Manikya dreamt that an idol of Tripura Sundari should be installed by means of shifting the idol from where he found it.The temple is situated on a tortoise-shaped small convex hill and has entrances from the north and the west. The roof of the temple consists of four slanting ‘Chhaar Chaalas’ that holds a lotus-shaped structure in the middle and looks like a modified Buddhist stupa. Lake Kalyansagar lies on the eastern side of the temple.The temple is inclusive of several ancient paintings, shlokas and stone inscriptions. The main idol of the temple is made of touch stone and is of a height of more than a metre. The idol belongs to the period of 10th or 12th century and is installed on a stone altar. The Goddess has an oval face and her two forelimbs are in a gesture of a Devi. There is also a crown on her matted hair and a garland of severed heads.The temple also has another idol that is known as the Chandi or Chotto Ma. An image of Lord Vishnu is enshrines this temple in the form of a black geode. Only in this place, the worshipping of Devi Shakti and Vishnu is found, which conjoins the Shakta and the Vaishnav culture.


Lakhi Narayan Bari temple is considered an icon of Lord Krishna,  installed by Krishnananda Sevayet and is valued as an antique monument.


Tea Estates- tea is grown in a traditional manner and consists of good blending qualities. The place is also popular for producing organic tea.
